Governor Brown Signs Bill Expanding Paid Family Leave
Governor Jerry Brown has signed new legislation that significantly expands California's Family Medical Leave Act. Under the current Paid Family Leave Act, employees can take up to six weeks of paid leave per year to care for a newly born or adopted child, or a seriously ill child, spouse, parent or domestic partner. Beginning in 2014, Insurers Can't Use Pre-existing Conditions or Other Health Factors in Pricing
Your age, where you live, how many in your family are covered, and whether you use tobacco products are the only factors that can be considered. Because of these changes, some people will pay less for coverage in 2014 than they are now. However, some people may pay more. But, no one will pay more than three times what anyone else pays for the same coverage. This is called the 3:1 Age Rating, because the ratio between the highest premium amount and the lowest can't be greater than three to one.
